Biochar

What it is...

Biochar is fine granular charcoal that is added to the soil. It has a pH value of 8-9. It has an open structure that helps the soil retain minerals, acts as a haven for soil microbes and also attracts and locks up contaminants.

How it is used...

Biochar can be dug in as a soil additive or cast over a grass sward. It may be added to compost in order to 'activate' it with minerals and soil microbes prior to use. It is generally several seasons before it is fully effective in the soil.

Biochar is used in horticulture, viticulture, interior planting, by green-keepers and occasionally in agriculture. Gardeners are increasingly aware of the potential of biochar to help improve soil structure and to retain minerals.

An additional benefit of biochar is in locking away extra carbon into the soil, where it can do good and at the same time lock away a proportion of a tree's carbon from the atmosphere. It will remain inert in the soil.
